Stage Fright is for Losers: How to Be the Ultimate Speaker

In the grand tapestry of human existence, there is one fear that echoes through the corridor of time…public speaking. *Cue the dramatic music*. Seriously, it’s right up there with skydiving and clowns.

But here’s the kicker: as scary as it can be, taking the time to master public speaking and presenting is 100% worth the blood, sweat, and tears. A skilled speaker can unlock the dormant potential in every listener, urging them to take that leap of faith, conquer their fears, and do awe-inspiring things. Forget about capes and flashy costumes; true heroism lies in your ability to command the stage and ignite a fire within others. So read on for our recipe for presentation greatness.

1. Knowledge is power or something.

In the dazzling world of presentation prep, there’s a secret weapon lurking in the shadows: actually knowing your damn topic. It should be a no-brainer, but believe it or not, lots of speakers just regurgitate a bunch of facts and stats expecting to wow the crowd.

No one likes that guy.

Instead, get to know your topic like the back of your hand. Dive deep to unearth those hiddens gems and mind-blowing insights that will make your audience’s jaws drop. But remember, knowing  your topic isn’t just about being a walking encyclopedia. It’s also about being so passionate about your subject that it turns you into a human firework. Picture it: you, the charismatic presenter, igniting the room with your contagious enthusiasm that leaves a lasting impact on your audience!

So, before you step foot on that stage, dive into your topic. Don’t settle for shallow waters when you can explore the vast ocean of information!

2. Stalk your audience.

Ok put away your night vision goggles and GPS tracking devices; we don’t really mean stalk your audience.

But, you will have to channel your inner Sherlock Holmes to gather clues and insights to create a tailor-made experience for your audience. The more you know about your audience, the better equipped you’ll be to create content that resonates.

And once you’ve cracked the code, you’re free to unleash your creative prowess. Weave in relevant examples, sprinkle in anecdotes that hit close to home, and add a pinch of humor that tickles their funny bones. Remember, your audience is a motley crew of individuals with diverse tastes. Embrace the challenge and find common ground that unites them. It’s like being a master illusionist, seamlessly blending their interests with your message, creating an experience they won’t soon forget.

3. Practice makes perfect?

We’re not saying you need to train for your presentation Olympic-athlete-style (unless you’re planning on delivering a keynote while running on a treadmill – in that case, we’d pay top dollar to see that feat). But seriously, you shouldn’t skip out on practice time. Embrace mistakes during rehearsals because it’s much better to stumble in private than face plant on stage, right?

Now, here’s the golden ticket to presentation glory: don’t just wing it during practice. Work that body language, add vocal inflections, and pace it out like a pro even when you’re just rehearsing. If you tap into your trusted tribe – fam, friends, coworkers – for feedback, it’ll add even more value to your rehearsals (and you can say goodbye to those awkward mirror monologues).

4. Don’t be a robot.

Don’t get us wrong. We love The Terminator just as much as the next guy. But your audience didn’t come to see a cyborg performance (probably) – they came to learn from you! So when you’re prepping for a human presentation where your goal is to engage, remember to RAP (and not like Emminem):

  • Rock those vocal tones! Use a variety of tones and textures as you speak. No one likes or remembers a monotone speaker. BORING!
  • Amp up audience involvement. Don’t just speak to them; create an interactive experience that keeps them invested. Try audience engagement apps, polls, open-ended questions and more! Trust us, they’ll appreciate that you want to connect with them as much as they want to connect with you.
  • Pack a punch with high impact visuals. Show off video clips and images that reinforce your points and keep your audience on the edge of their seats (and if you wanna learn more about the lost art of presentation decks – we’ve got you covered with a blog post too!)

But most of all, remember that humans mess up. Even the very best speakers stumble on stage, and guess what? That’s okay. If anything, that shows that you’re one of us and not a terrifying machine trying to take over the world.

5. Deliver with rizz (as the kids say).

The truth is, the audience craves your unique perspective. Cause hey, there’s only one source of awesomeness for that juicy info they’re dying to know – YOU! And that’s a BIG deal. So act like it!

Use intentional movement and hand gestures to show your flair and confidence and let your points simmer in their minds before hitting ‘em with that “aha” moment they never saw coming. It’s your time to shine!

Ok…and?

Let’s keep it real – becoming the next Mel Robbins doesn’t come with a “Voila!” and a sprinkle of fairy dust. But fear not, we’ve coached countless speakers to conquer that stage like champs. We’ve transformed them from shaky knees to presentation powerhouses that left audiences stunned. These 5 steps are like our secret sauce, tried, tested, and speaker-approved. So go on, give ‘em a whirl, and let us bask in the glory of your presentation triumph!
